Why Onshape is making Poindexter by Design, an on demand mechanical engineering service provider, successful in 2023 and beyond!
- Second to none streamlined design collaboration. There is no down time waiting for files to be saved and shared or emailed. Whether you're working with a fellow engineer in the same office or across the globe, it is all the same with Onshape!
- There are several unique features Onshape provides that other CAD software will never be able to. The big one that comes to mind is the in-context editing. Have you ever found yourself designing and flipping back and forth from part to assembly and then back to the part to take measurements to drive part level features for fit? No more my fellow engineers! Onhsape allows you to do what is called in-context editing, it is a tool that allows you to drive part level features and dimensions directly from the assembly level! I highly recommend you learn more about this and the many other features only Onshape can provide your engineering toolbox!
- Documentation management! I cannot say enough good things about how Onshape gives you the ability to organize a design into tabs, folders, documents, and document folders. The ability to control different permissions such as editing, or view only is fantastic! Easily apply these permissions to teams or individuals to employees within your organization or more importantly, with customers who don't even have an Onshape account!
- Dimensioning a hole feature in a drawing when there are multiple holes, the hole count does not parametrically update. For example, when there are 3x of the same hole, Onshape forces you to manually type in 3x instead of parametrically populating the hole count. This gets very dangerous if say, one of the 3x holes changes but you forget to update the 3x to 2x. Other CAD software does provide this.
- I know Onshape provides guidance on performance considerations and how to structure a project through their literature, however, a dedicated video from Onshape that directly addresses the guidelines on how to minimize file load and reload times would be beneficial to all future and current Onshape users. I think they should incorporate this directly in their training. Poindexter by Design went through the growing pains of this issue but through the Onshape literature and our own experiences we've developed guidelines on how to keep our Onshape performance maximized!
Great full-featured CAD system in the cloud
- Collaboration
- speed
- Ease of use
- Assemblies
Onshape brought CAD and PDM to the modern era.
One of the problems that onshape solved was to work via cloud instead of local server. Another very import thing is the very low hardware requirement, as the system works on browser. The tool simply works perfectly.
- Cloud accessibility and processing
- CAD design
- PDM
- Customer support
- Part Number creation
- Catalogue visualization (for all PNs created)
- Draft is a bit slow, but not a big deal
It takes the best from well-know platforms like SolidWorks, SolidEdge and Inventor and brings it to the modern age where you just access a cloud platform and do what you need, without installation and different software versions.
Plus, the git-base version control apllied to CAD models is just brilliant. Why nobody thought it before?
For both big and complex assemblies to less complicated products, onshape document-structure helps you avoiding the usual mess around parts and assemblies, sharing and obsolete files. So, for any startup or even big companies with well-structured workflows, onshape can be tailored to meet the demands.
Most innovative design software ever!
- Not needing to save a file.
- Working in the clod.
- Super easy to share.
- Real time team collaboration.
- Excellent management of versions.
- You absolutely need an internet connection (not really a con).
- It lags behind in some areas regarding specialty functions like electric or mold design.
Onshape Shapes My Work and Ideas, Helping Me to Sell My Ideas
- No install, use any where, any device, instant access to my data
- Ease of use, the UI just works for me
- In application support, in the very few cases I've needed help it has been rapid and the ability to share your model with support is tremendous in getting help
- I'm a Pro-user but I would like to have the possibility to have a pay-as-use option in some form. Now it is all or nothing (the public sharing of models - and model rights!) is not an option for many not-for-profit projects.
- On-site hosting might help to sell the cloud concept to the more paranoid management.
- Basic CAM generation would be awesome
- Nonparametric modeling in some form or making it easier to use assemblies for those use cases where you want to model some parts and just play around moving things when you are exploring different configurations.
- Doing Industrial Design type sketching and experimenting is not really a strong point on Onshape
Best 3D CAD package compared to Solidworks and Inventor
With other CAD programs you have to have a network license or VPN to use it on another machine or at home. With onshape I can use it at work on my desktop and on my home desktop whenever I need it. If I am really in a pinch, then I can use the android app as well.
- Great 3D design package
- NEVER CRASHES
- Updates are constant and they listen to users
- Accessible from anywhere at anytime
- The PDM implementation is a life saver
- 2D Drawings - This has gotten a lot better but they need to add more features to drawings
- Renders - This is a recent addition but still has a long way to go
- No feature identify tool for imports
It will never crash - The others are notorious for crashing
No Long Updates so no down time
inbuilt PDM makes revision control a breeze
Access from anywhere
Don't need an expensive PC as everything is cloud based
Couldn't be happier!
- Cloud storage
- Github-style version control
- simultaneous editing with multiple users
- Coordinate systems are difficult to see and work with. Assemblies should start with coordinate systems
- Mate connectors work well in theory, but in practice have introduced extra work in some cases where geometry is complex. It would be great to have the option to create assemblies in a more traditional fashion.
- Part and Assembly studio delineation is confusing. Part studios seem to offer a lot of the same capability as assemblies (in that each part studio can contain multiple solid bodies) but lack some key functionality (moving parts within the part studio being the largest opportunity for improvement -> the current "transform" button does not have a "freeform" move which would be useful in cases where the design of one part is driven by geometry of a moving part.
Room for improvement: rapid prototyping and freeform modeling.
Onshape has put Solidworks on notice.
- Parametric modeling.
- File management.
- Program stability.
- Performance optimization.
- Mechanical assemblies.
- Drawings
- Model based definition.
- Drawing release management.
Onshape: The Game-changer
- Interference Check
- Wiring/ Cable
- 3D Design
- Drawing
- Incomplete lines generated in drawing.
- Difficulty in selection of drawing elements, views, pick point of dimensions.
- Bug in creating multiple broken views inside a single view.
- Parts can be modeled together inheriting geometry from each other
- Mating using mate connectors is much easier and faster than other cad systems
- Cloud storage eliminates file backup procedures, all data are managed by Onshape
- Onshape stores everything in a database, never looses track of a file or a folder.
- In drawings (2d) we miss the possibility to specify line type (hidden/dashed) for specific parts/subassemblies
- In drawings we would like to draw lines based on coordinates or snap to grid
- We miss one command to switch all views in a drawing to reference a specific version or to the main workspace.
- Collaboration: OnShape's versioning is sophisticated and powerful, yet easy to use.
- Browser-based: there's no client to install and thus minimum setup, and it even runs on fairly low-spec laptops
- Excellent UI: OnShape looks great! It's pleasing to the eye and has very clear layout of objects and tools.
- More native support for mechanical features like threads and gears (currently requires third-party plugins)
- Better support for applying surface textures and text
- Quality rendering of parts
Onshape is THE tool
- CAD
- Collaboration
- Versions
- Features present in other CAD platforms but not in Onshape (yet).
Just test it and you maybe love it!
- Web based
- Full 3d modelling cad
- Reliable
- Some missing function that I was used in other 3D cads, but after updates, a lot of them has been added
Onshape - The next generation of 3-D modeling
- Revision History
- Web-based storage of native files
- Collaborative access
- Sandbox designing
- Mating objects are a little difficult to work with
- The mirror tool is limited to parts, removing the ability to "add" to the existing part
Onshape review. Great capability vs cost.
- Standard sketch driven CAD models
- Assemblies for fit and movement verification
- File and project management
- Drawing and drafting module is advancing but behind
- A native CAM solution would be welcome
- A native photo rendering solution would be nice
A love letter to Onshape from an admirer.
- Always on and available in any level of machine. No need for a workstation.
- Lack of files and need to manage same.
- Like the document approach where everything related to the project can be in a single logical container.
- Like the overall speed and lack of crashes or need to update.
- Like that it will import nearly anything. We often use it as a file translator for the SW folks.
- Like the constant development and frequent feature improvements.
- Really like the support. Nearly every time we need assistance with something and submit a ticket, there is a rep responding within literally, minutes. Best support in the business.
- Like the team too. Always easy to get in touch with and responsive to issues and or questions.
- Feature scripts. We don't yet program our own, but we do use those created by others. Having that ability really opens up what the tool can be if you can program it. I'm learning Python right now because I want to be able to dig into that side of the tool and see what I can do.
- Sheet metal tools. That is the number one issue holding back the wider deployment in our environment. As a sheet metal fabricator, that is the realm we work in 95% of the time, if not more.
- Maybe some additional mates like a center mate that would infer a center point between two other features.
- Faster performance. It has gotten noticeably faster over the last couple of years, but nobody ever complained about faster response times, so more is more.
We don't use the release cycle aspect of Onshape since the rest of our organization is based on files and using PDM for controlling and distributing them. We have discussed how we might use Onshape for that whole workflow, but until it is the primary CAD tool, will not likely pursue that for now.
Onshape - Cloud-based CAD
- Takes advantage of hardware and software in the cloud.
- Version and feature updates are seamless.
- Collaboration with customers and design associates.
- PDM is built in.
- Not as feature rich as some established CAD programs.
- Some features are so new and revolutionary they are are confusing.
Great Value for Great Design Collaboration
- Real-time design collaboration with multiple users.
- Faster loading times for complex assemblies.
- Easier to use assembly mate features.
- Sheet Metal Features
- Sheet Metal Flat Pattern Post Processing tools
- Need for granular control for sheet metal bend allowances
Onshape would not be suited for organizations that rely on highly configurable features (currently found in traditional high-end CAD software). Onshape does continue to make improvements to many features and listens to community feedback for those areas where more granular control is required.
